A few weeks ago, HIGH 90’S sent me a flight sampler of their wax-infused flavored pre-rolls. Each joint is packed with top-shelf flower blended with 1,200mg of cannabis wax and natural terpenes for flavor, resulting in 30-40% THC per roll. What’s that mean? It means that even if you think you smoke a lot of weed, you’ll have one sesh with a HIGH 90’S joint and next thing you know, you’ve been launched into space faster than a billionaire trying to escape taxes and climate change.
What I love about these is that a single session is enough to last the whole afternoon/evening, so you can go through much less flower and give your lungs a break. I’ve been unwrapping the joints and mixing it with a little bit of Tonic CBD flower, which still provides a comfortably heady buzz while relaxing my body and relieving the persistent wrist pain I have from typing.
HIGH 90’s pre-rolls come in 8 flavors – strawberry, pineapple, gelato, peach, watermelon, pineapple, pink lemonade, tropical punch, and double cup (grape). The flower and experience are the same regardless of the flavor, but each one does smell and taste distinct enough that you’ll definitely have a favorite (mine is gelato, it smells like ice cream and cookies).
I also had the chance to interview the creative director of HIGH 90’S to learn more about the brand, their dedication to activism, and plans for more products in the future. Tell me a bit about HIGH 90’S and the inspiration behind the brand.
The inspiration came from trying to bring that 90’s California vibe back while also creating a brand that wasn’t intimidating when it came to experimenting with cannabis. The 90’s are all about self-expression, we think that specific era embodies having a good time with friends, exploring and trying new things – which is exactly what our brand is all about. So, in 2019, we decided to create a product for patients looking for flavored cannabis without tobacco. We launched HIGH 90’S early 2020 and are now sold all across California. Our flavors come from a blend of natural terpenes, creating a healthier alternative to blunt wraps for our patients.
It looks like HIGH 90’S launched around January 2020. What kind of effect has the pandemic had on your brand, good or bad?
To be honest, our launch was actually really successful. I think with more people being at home, trying to stay sane amidst a global pandemic, our products were highly welcomed within the cannabis community. That being said, now places are starting to open up again, we’ve been able to host some really cool events, something we definitely missed out early into our launch, following the pandemic. This is something we’re super passionate about, we strive to bring people together, in a social environment, with the great cannabis and finally meet our community members – this is something you will definitely see more of this year.
I can tell that activism is a core part of HIGH 90’S and its overall mission. What kind of work do you think is most needed to create a more equitable and safe industry?
HIGH 90’S can be considered extremely motivated by social justice. While we have yet to to take part in any real initiatives for social justice, it is part of our core initiative as a brand to prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion. We are hoping that as we grow our brand, we will be able to become more of a mouthpiece for conversation on ‘touchy’ but important issues, like racism and gender inequality. We also reflect the importance of these values in the members of our team, which is made up of an exceptionally diverse group of hardworking individuals.
What does an average workday look like for the HIGH 90’S team?
As a start-up, our team is small but mighty. In comparison to many of the larger cannabis companies, HIGH 90’S is certainly on the smaller side. With that being said, our work environment is incredibly collaborative and interactive.
What would you most like to see change or evolve about the cannabis industry?
Hopefully the future will usher in a society that is able to see the true benefits of cannabis. Though it’s been many years since cannabis was legalized in California and a number of other states, it’s still very stigmatized.
What kind of advice would you give someone who’s interested in getting involved in cannabis work?
This industry is truly all about quality. But more specifically, working in the cannabis industry is genuinely a lifestyle. Starting HIGH 90’S was and remains to be a mission that is incredibly personal to myself and everyone else on the team. Some of us grew up with cannabis as a part of our lifestyle, and for those that did not, it has since been incorporated. The reason we feel so equipped to create just the right product is because we all have a personal stake in this. Our team would never create or market a product that we wouldn’t use ourselves. Cannabis is a passion.
Do you have plans to offer products besides flower or pre-rolls?
Absolutely! Many things are in the works for HIGH 90’S. More specifically, we are working on developing a selection of concentrates for the super stoner dabbers, exotic flower for the experienced smokers who love to roll their own nugs and a disposable vape for those who want to be discreet – watch this space as we go into more detail on these later this summer!
