Today we’re chatting with Alecia Weisman, the lead grower at Oakland, California-based Legion of Bloom, a 10x award-winning collective of “compassionate, conscious, and sustainable cannabis experts.” The Legion develops products like CBD roll-ons, live resin, vape pens, and rosin, and you can even view lab testing results for their flower and products right on their website.
Tell us a little bit about the Legion of Bloom and your role at the company:
At the Legion of Bloom, we pride ourselves on being a conscious cannabis brand. We are a family-based company that values organic and sustainable cultivation practices. All of our products meet the highest standards of quality and we use cannabis and botanically derived terpenes in lieu of synthetic terpenes.
I am a lead cultivator in Legion’s canopy management team. My role is to create high-quality inputs, such as flower and trim, for all our products. I focus on organic soil blending, compost teas, and organic pest control. We believe that starting from the ground up is the best way to grow all natural cannabis.
Why cannabis? Did you work in agriculture before getting involved in this industry?
I was actually an environmental scientist before I started working with cannabis, and while first learning to grow cannabis, I received my masters in Hydrology with a special focus on water quality & nutrient cycling. I’ve always had an affinity towards growing plants, and growing my own cannabis has been very rewarding.
My husband, who happens to be one of the Legion of Bloom’s Co-Founders, and I have been an unstoppable team as our cannabis cultivation endeavors have expanded.
I believe that the values of the farmers are of the utmost importance. We make decisions every day, and at the Legion of Bloom, our decisions are based on a strong set of values. Consumers have the power to choose, and I personally use my purchasing power to support like-minded companies that promote doing good in the world. When creating cannabis products, it’s important to consider what materials were used to grow that cannabis from start to finish. You are what you consume! It’s true on every level.
As cannabis becomes more “mainstream,” have you noticed more women getting involved in the industry?
Actually, I’ve noticed that women have always been heavily involved in the cannabis industry. It does seem that as cannabis becomes less taboo, we now feel more comfortable talking about it.
What advice would you give women looking to get into the cultivation game?
I am inspired by other women constantly. I say get out there and give it your all! Follow your heart and trust your gut. We women are very capable, and our intuition is a special gift. We can do anything we set our hearts & minds to, so don’t settle or sell yourself short. Set your goals high, and never doubt yourself!
